UNION SQUARE, FLATIRON DISTRICT & GRAMERCY

There’s plenty of shopping to be had in this big block of neighborhoods. First and foremost is Union Sq, home to a delightful greenmarket (see the boxed text), which hits the park several times a week all year round. Meanwhile huge chain stores flank the park to the north and south, offering books, discount fashion and music. Fourteenth St, more to the west than to the east, is a shopping adventure all of its own, with store upon store hawking discount electronics, cheap linens and a great range of shoes and hit-or-miss clothing, from both bargain indies and chains like Urban Outfitters and Diesel. You’ll find more upmarket chain stores heading up Fifth Avenue, with Paul Smith, BCBG, Anthropologie, Zara and Intermix among the standouts.

IDLEWILD BOOKS Map Books

One of the best new indie bookshops to open in recent years, Idlewild is a great shopping destination when planning or even daydreaming about travel. Books are divided by region and cover guidebooks as well as fiction, travelogues, history, cookbooks and other stimulating fare when wanting to delve into a country. The big windows overlooking the street, high ceilings and world globe display (all for sale) add to the charm. Check ‘Events’ on the website for Idlewild’s lineup of readings and book-launch parties, sometimes with drinks, music and dance.

BARNES & NOBLE Map Books & Music

With a dozen locations in NYC (visit the website for more), this heavy-hitter superstore is a massive space, with four floors of books and magazines covering endless topics including travel, cooking, classic literature, memoir, biography, children, art, dance, theater, health, gay and lesbian, and new fiction. There’s also an extensive music section with CDs of all genres, and a popular cafe as well. Frequent readings by well-known authors also happen onsite.

BOOKS OF WONDER

Map Children’s Books

212-989-3270; 18 W 18th St; 10am-7pm Mon-Sat, 11am-6pm Sun; F, V, L to 6th Ave-14th St

Chelsea folks adore this small, fun-loving bookstore devoted to children’s and young-adult titles. It’s a great place to take the kids on a rainy day, especially when a kids’ author is giving a reading, or a storyteller is on hand.

FILENE’S BASEMENT

Map Discount Department Store

212-358-0169; 4 Union Sq S; 9am-10pm Mon-Sat, 11am-8pm Sun; L, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6 to 14th St-Union Sq

This outpost of the Boston-based chain is not actually in a basement, but three flights up, with a tremendous view of Union Sq. The best stuff to see is inside, though, where you will find labels for up to 70% less than the price at regular retail outlets. Like similar discount department stores, it’s got clothing, shoes, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics and some housewares (like bedding). Fashionistas willing to go on painstaking searches could unearth many treasures, including apparel from Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors, Versace and more.
